2009 - A new beginning

Dear 5Couragers,

I hope everyone had spent their holidays having fun, resting, reflecting, or simply catching up on things or with people whom you have sort of neglected during school term.

2009 marks an important year for all of you. Bearing in mind that time passes really quickly, especially in P6, your top priority would have to be your studies, at least for the next 9-10 months.

Although you may feel the pain and torment of having to sacrifice your play time for work, the only person who will truly benefit from the sacrifices made would be yourself. So, no matter how badly (or well) you have done in 2008, it's time to kick all bad habits and pull up your socks!

Just imagine yourself looking forward to (and not worried sick about) the release of PSLE results because you know you have truly put in your best, crying when you receive the result slip not because you have done badly but because you had finally see the fruits of your hard labour, having so many choices of secondary schools to pick from because you qualify to enter so many of them instead of worrying that you would be posted to a school that is not of your choice and not being able to join any one of your friends in the schools that they are going to. (The list goes on and on...)

Hence, set a goal for yourself right at the beginning of the year and work towards it. I have confidence that all of you are capable of moving on to a higher level if you put your mind to it.

Read up in advance before lessons, be willing to share your knowledge with the rest, ask and clarify when in doubt and treat your school work seriously.

2009 marks a new beginning for me too. I would no longer be a teacher at Admiralty Primary School. I would be spending more time with my loved ones (I love all of you too...) and still continue to teach but in a different setting. I regret that I would not be able to take you for Primary 6 but trust me, for you are in good hands. You are always welcomed to write to me at my gmail account (mrslimhl@gmail.com) and I wish all of you the very best!

Tribute to Birdie (Finale)

I would like to thank everyone for their kind words and condolences on the demise of Birdie. I had sent her for cremation and she had been returned in a beautiful, spherical, golden urn. Hence, although my husband and I (and many of you 5 couragers) will miss her chirpy presence, her ashes now lies in the urn which is placed in the living room.

In your lifetime, I'm sure you would come across people, animals or things which are special to you. Don't hesitate to show or tell them that they are special and treasure them while they are still with you.

In our hearts, Birdie remains a very unique companion who will be remembered, always.

Tribute to Birdie (part 2)

1 December 2008 (10am)
After finding another Avian vet which is slightly further down Sembawang Road, I placed Birdie in a box with a towel wrapped around her for warmth and headed to Yishun in a taxi.

As predicted, Birdie was in a really bad state. Almost two days without food and she was reduced to skin and bones. It didn't show until the vet parted her feathers. 42 grams was all she weighed and the vet told me to prepare for the worst. I was given an option of 'hospitalising' her, that is, warding her at the clinic in one of the insulated bird boxes or nursing her at home. I could not risk being away from her if something should happen to her in the crucial 1-2 days so I chose the latter.

She was fed her medication by the vet with a special tube before I took her home after collecting the prescription. Unfortunately, I did not even have a chance to give them to her.

1 December 2008 (12 noon)
I was getting ready to leave the house after taking my lunch when I heard some scratching sound from the box I had kept birdie in. I knew something was amiss when I saw her. I picked her up immediately and rushed to the living room. I wished someone was with me then but hubby would only be back on the 6th.

In the last brief moment of her life, I stroked her head and called her name over and over again. I took a last blurred picture of her and sat in front of my camera which was on video mode. She did something like a neck rotation, an action she had never attempted before, while I held on to her tightly. Something clear and sticky dripped from the sides of her beak while I scrambled for tissue.

While still in my hands, I felt her life slipping away with the slowing down of her heartbeat.

12.20pm was when she left us.

2 pm was when the tear ducts finally decided to take a break.

Several unfortunate incidents happened in the year 2008, which resulted in the lost of many innocent lives but I could not recall having been that heart-broken since the demise of my grandmother about 6 years ago.

Tribute to a special feathered friend ~ Birdie (part 1)

2008 is coming to an end. It just came to my mind that I should share with my dear students, a little bit more about my beautiful friend, Birdie, which they already know much about.

Let me start once again, for those who are not familiar with her, on our first encounter...

2006 - September school holidays
Bus stop along AMK Ave 10
Upon arriving at the bus stop, something bright green at the kerb caught my eye. It had never crossed my mind that I would be waiting for bus 55 with a 'tiny parrot'. When I saw a bus coming towards the stop, my natural instinct was to rush forward to pick up the bird in my hands.

To my surprise, it allowed me to hold it without any protest. My husband and I examined the 'tiny parrot' with great interest. It was really beautifully coloured in bright green with turquoise-blue blended into the ends of its tail. It was peach-faced and looked alert albeit noticeably tired or weak.

Ignoring the fact that we would be running late for our KTV session with our friends, we decided that we should keep it since there was no sign of anyone looking for a lost bird. Thankfully, there is a shop that sells birds and bird supplies a few blocks away. Feeling that the poor bird could be starving or thirsty, we hurried over to the shop and was greeted with a surprised look when we showed the shopkeeper the bird we found. I had forgotten which were the choices we had for the colour of the cage but anyway, no prizes for guessing the colour I had picked, which was yellow :)

That was the beginning of many wonderful moments shared with this little friend of ours.

Precious Moments...
After doing a little bit of research, we found out that our little friend is a 'peach-faced lovebird'. It was only half a year later in March 2007 when she laid her first egg that we realised that she was a 'girl'. We also discovered her talent in shredding paper which is actually a very common behaviour for birds of her kind and her dislike for dark coloured objects which she would squawk at when brought near her.

During the times when she was out from her cage for free-roaming, she practised and made great improvements in her navigation skills. She started from flying from the kitchen to the living room, to landing on our heads and making U-turns when she discovered that there was only one person in the house at times. It was late this year that we discovered that she had another talent. She could make the bell attached to the hoop in her cage tinkle, just like the ice-cream man! She was one talented bird.

Ups and of course, downs...
Birdie fell sick in mid-October this year. Besides refusing to eat, she would be huddled in a corner of the cage, bury her head in the small towel we had placed in her cage and sleep. Even when we took her out of the cage, she would close her eyes and sleep in our hands or on our lap. We were caught by surprise of her sudden change in behaviour and I remembered scouring the Internet for Avian vets, which was not very common, in Singapore.

After medication and lots of tender loving care, Birdie survived the ordeal. At one point, both of us blamed her falling sick on ourselves for neglecting her for a few days as it was the peak period of the academic year. Whether her illness came about because of neglect or infection of the respiratory system, as claimed by the vet, we were just glad that we were given a chance to make amends.

Mid-November 2008
Birdie laid 2 eggs in 3 days with only one rest day. Her second egg really came as a surprise as she had never laid more than one in a short span of time. We felt this could be too draining on her tiny body...

30 November 2008
Birdie showed the same symptoms we observed in October. I was pretty sure this time that it wasn't as a result of neglect as I had practically let her out every evening to play with her as I was left in charge of her while hubby is away for reservist. I hated myself for discarding her medication from October as I found that there was nothing we could do but wait till Monday to bring her to the vet as they were all closed on Sunday afternoons.

November 13 08' is the day we cnt forget .

okayy , erm ... tday we hd class party at 9+am . then , mrs lim took pics , sme boys went 'crazy' and girls were as per normal . aftr recess smthn happen . cnt tell th whle story , jst to play safe . (; so , after school was th BEST . maybe most of 5 couragers wasnt there , bt it was amazing man . 7 people stayed bck in 5co classroom w mrs lim .
-HuiMin;KaiQi;Dylan;Nurin;Taara;nazaren;Amira . After all the signing of books from mrs lim , taara went dancing crazily . . . haha , all started laughing , then me and taara sang This Is Me frm Camp Rock . taara was superduper shyy ...aftr tht , mrs lim wanted MORE performance . i prepared fr my next performnce whle nazaren and taara thnk of a choir song they sang . They finally sang a song during SYF . After they sang , it was my turn to dance . i danced the song Like a Boy by Ciara . Mrs lim LOVES my dancing . I knw she does *SS* ! so , after my dnce , mrs lim stll wanted mre . and wanted hui min and kai qi next . so , hui min and kai qi acted ... hui min is a gd actress ... she acted tht the frog died . then so drama . kaiqi arrsted hui min and hui min ran out of jail . and kaiqi and hui min shoot each other . it was very funny . you guys should actually stay bck . bt if u cnt , nevermind . then dylan was the last-last one mrs lim wnted to see him perform . wushu , i think ... bt dyln ddnt want ... so , yarr , mrs lim did hve fun ... even 7 of us ... w all th laughing and all ... nt tryng to mke all of the other 5 courage jealousxx (: alright ? thts all ! tkecres all couragers ; dnt find fault w ppl around you . peace .

Alright , now tomorrow is don't know what promotion [ not that sales promotion ] day and we're off to our P6 class. I hope next year, a good teacher will teach us. And I don't want lessons to be just study study study, but also some activities to help us learn. And I hope that our class will be comfortable, like not too small, i also hope that I can sit with my best buddies.. Well, but this is just a HOPE. It may be turned into reality, it may not.. Anyway, lets all pray hard, again .. BYEBYE !! ~~

umm, today our fate was told to us by our teacher, mrs lim, and happy to say, we are going to be in the same class, some were happy to the extent of raising their hands high up and like jumping out of their chairs, shouting " Yoo H00 !" . [ most boys ] but some weren't very excited , maybe because they long knew this would happen ? Anyway, tomorrow is bazaar, I need to turn in and go to sleep earlier so that tomorrow will be my better day.

Today was another day at school, seriously, I think the whole class was happy today. We played that complete story game, and all of us ended up with damn funny stories, which I think made this game interestinqq. After that arhx, we also played sudoku & ...

Slowly, slowly, slowly, our minds started to crack...

Actually I was also very frustrated lahhs, cause it wasn`t very eazy lorh. Luckily, I play sudoku once in a week ( weekly )..
